The verb to be in Passé Simple in French

The passé simple is a very formal tense in French. You don't need to use it, but you should understand it when you see it.

Conjugation of the Verb Être in Passé Simple

Examples

To understand how the passé simple is used, here are a few sentences in context:

Il fut élu président en 1848. (He was elected president in 1848.)

Nous fûmes très heureux de cette nouvelle. (We were very happy about this news.)

Ils furent surpris par l'annonce. (They were surprised by the announcement.)

Here is an example of short story

Il fut une fois un petit village caché dans les montagnes. Ce village fut le lieu de nombreuses histoires fascinantes. Les habitants furent courageux et déterminés, malgré les difficultés. Chaque hiver, la neige fut si épaisse qu'elle bloquait les chemins, mais les villageois ne furent jamais découragés. Ils furent toujours prêts à s'aider mutuellement et à partager ce qu'ils avaient. Grâce à leur solidarité, ils furent heureux, même dans les moments les plus difficiles.
